Since our recent adoption event at PetSmart, we have been getting a number of questions about introducing a new cat into a household that already has a cat. This process can be long, so we’re not going to write it all out here; but here are several good resources to look at. A couple of short and simple tips first though: 1) Patience is key! Don’t try to rush the introductory process. Let the cats set the pace. 2) Give your resident cat extra love so she doesn’t feel abandoned for the new cuddly kitten. 3) Positive reinforcement for every good encounter. Find what motivates your resident cat (food? toys? ‘nip?) and reward him with it whenever he is nice to the new cat. Soon, he will associate treats with the new cat and be more welcoming.
